SCHOOLS

Allen County School kids June 22, 2004

Kevin spoke to the Allen County elementary summer school students about the importance of education and getting active when it comes to health and fitness initiatives in their school and community.

Roosevelt High School July 8th 2004

9 AM spoke to the approximately 700 summer school students. We met Roosevelt Principal Mrs. Shead. I spoke to inspire and motivate the summer school students at Roosevelt High. I wanted to leave them with four important points:

1. To never give up.

2. It's not what happens to you that matters, it's how you choose to respond to what happens that is important.

3. The only failures are the ones who don't learn from their mistakes.

4. Greatness is all around you. Don't be afraid to ask for help from someone who is successful at something that you want to do.

I presented an autographed copy of my book to the school's library.

The students were really great to talk to and were very interested in hearing about the tour and what I had to say.

Beaumont High School. July 8th 2004

I spoke to a much smaller group of about 70 students. Principal Travis Brown Sr. gave Dora, Andy, and I all a T-Shirt which had the most popular quote from Principal Brown: “Not at Beaumont .” While at Beaumont we also met Assistant Principal Katrice Noble who re-emphasized the points that I had made to the students. I presented a copy of my book to the school library as well as a copy of my comic book.

Lyndon B. Johnson High School September 9th, 2004

“Buena Vida” (Good Life) – That was the focus of my talk to the students today.

When I arrived at LBJ High School , some school officials including the principal, Mr. Oscar Perez and his assistant Paul were there waiting for me. The media was also waiting and were excited about covering the event.

The principal, Oscar Perez, told me that LBJ was a brand new high school, and that this was their very first year to be in the new building. He told me that there was an extremely big challenge for him and the rest of the teachers to keep kids interested not only in school, but also in the importance of exercise and proper nutrition.

I told Mr. Perez that I was really honored that he'd asked me to come to speak to his school, and that I would definitely focus my efforts to talk to the kids about the importance of education and how it is the foundation to all of a persons accomplishments in life. I told him that I would also relate the purpose of why I was pushing across America : to inspire and motivate people to get fit because of the great economic strain that obesity and unhealthy living are having on our healthcare system.

I did a few quick television interviews before I went to speak to the students. I told the media that my purpose at LBJ was to help motivate the students to stay in school, get an education, and to help them understand the importance of health and fitness. Not only is our health declining as Americans, but also our healthcare system is in danger. Immediately after the interviews I went into the gym to speak with the students.

I told the students what an honor it was to be able to speak to them as I ended the “Big Push” in Laredo , TX . I told them about how I had crossed the Mexican border earlier that day and about how I had met with their mayor, Betty Flores and how I had received a key to the city. I told them about how she had shared with me her fitness initiative for the city of Laredo , Buena Vida. Mayor Flores and the other city officials want the community to know that the good life involves staying active, exercising, and eating right. The Buena Vida Program works to prevent and/or reduce chronic diseases through early identification, education, counseling, and referral of diabetic, hypertensive and cancer screening. The program provides a health awareness screening for the community.

Since this is the beginning of the school year, I tried to help them start the year off right by leaving them with points to help them with their school work, health and fitness, and family lives as well.

1. To never give up.

2. It's not what happens to you that matters, it's how you choose to respond to what happens that is important.

3. The only failures are the ones who don't learn from their mistakes.

4. Greatness is all around you. Don't be afraid to ask for help from someone who is successful at something that you want to do.

5. Mucho rabajo Nunca Alto (work hard and never stop).

I presented an autographed copy of my book to the school's library.

The students were really a great audience and very receptive to what I had to say. Many of the students came up to me after I spoke and were very interested in learning more about health and fitness. I gave a lot of autographs, and shook the students' hands. The teachers thanked me for coming by. Coach Gonzalez the basketball coach gave Dora and I both t shirts from the basketball team.
